In 1917 the Scottish-built Charmer sank off the coast of Nanaimo shore, at Gabriola and Jake Point. The lighthouse tender — the SS Quadra — that Charmer crashed into would later become a rum runner during prohibition. And that shouldn’t be a surprise for any local — spirit making and brewing has always been a proud Nanaimo tradition and one we at Longwood are happy to maintain today!
