Nanaimo Tug of War Team

September 20th, 2019

Taken in the early 1800s, this image shows the Nanaimo tug of war team poised for action. Unlike today’s backyard competitions, 19th century tug of war centered on a crew’s ability to adjust the ship’s sails, even during heated battles. They tugged on the lines to change course and right the ship, fleeing danger and combating enemy crafts in the process — and bringing tug of war into popular vernacular. They look like they could use a beer (or two…)! (From the collection of Nanaimo Museum)
