1890 Nanaimo Gun Club

Hunting, fishing and outdoor life has always been a major part of life in Nanaimo. This image taken more than 125 years ago shows members of the Nanaimo Gun Club practicing their shots at a local gun range. This group of area marksmen and hunters often gathered to shoot at ranges as well as to hunt local wildlife including black bear, elk, cougars and deer. At the time — and, still, today — Nanaimo and the surrounding areas were acclaimed for their rich hunting grounds, perfect for gun clubs and other amateur sportsmen. The Nanaimo Gun Club would later give way to larger organizations including the present-day Nanaimo Fish and Game Protective Association. (From the collection of the Nanaimo Museum)
