Band leading parade down commercial street. 1892

Waving on the marching band

A local marching band proudly played and marched through the streets of Nanaimo, in this 1892 shot. This image is one of the earliest of the city’s May long weekend celebration, which first began on May 25, 1863. The tradition continues today, with thousands of residents and visitors flocking to Nanaimo in late May to celebrate the community and its rich heritage. As in this photo, the festivities — now called Nanaimo Heritage Day — include a traditional parade down Commercial Street as well as food, music and evening fireworks. What was once this robust marching band has evolved into five decades of celebration and local pride. (From the collection of the Nanaimo Museum)
