Unity is Strength
This shot was taken on August 20, 1882 at the Marquis of Lorne Trellis Arch in Nanaimo. Behind the well-heeled citizens the arch proudly proclaims, “Coal is King” and “Unity is Strength,” along with a Chinese poem and characters reading, “Scenery pleases the people, good luck when the flowers in spring.” What’s truly unique about this structure — erected to honor Sir John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, the Marquess of Lorne and fourth Governor General of Canada — is its design and overall architecture, which borrows from the popular and well-recognized Chinese Imperial styles, a direct nod to the workers who constructed it, (From the collection of Nanaimo Museum).
