As Nanaimo continued to grow throughout the 1800s, Harbour City residents decided it was time to form an organized fire brigade. At a town meeting on May 4, 1878 the Black Diamond Engine Company was established, consisting of a group of volunteer firefighters. The brigade quickly became well known as an outstanding volunteer ensemble, having one of the lowest fire records in the province.

Today, Nanaimo’s Fire Rescue Department is responsible for more than just fighting fires. They take on rescue and emergency medical aid missions, responding to over 4000 emergency incidents per year!
